China’s Wild West – Neighbours of the Desert
Synopses
The German cyclist-scout reaches the provincial capital of Xinjiang in Part 2 of the film. Nowhere else has the Chinese influence asserted itself so strongly as here in this metropolis of two-million souls. In contrast, the further westward he ventures on his pioneering trip along the former Silk Route, the closer he comes into contact with the vestiges of the former, original East-Turkestan. In the oasis cities to the north of the famous Taklamakan Desert, the Uighur People constitute the overwhelming majority of the population; here the Uighurs have best been able to preserve their Turk-related native culture. The highpoint of his journey is the legendary oasis city of Kashgar near the Pakistani border - it remains the "secret capital" of the Uighur People.
